Keeping Kids Safe on Social Media with Danielle Betines – Season #2 Episode #4

Keeping kids safe on social media from dangerous and negative content is something many parents battle with.

In this episode, Danielle (Gasalberti) Betines, Author of Love Your Selfie, talks about some of the ways she has seen social media affect kids in negative ways. She shares some interesting insight into what we can be more aware of when it comes to what our kids are up to on social media. You will get tips on how to make social media more safe for them and also how to encourage them to share more with you.

Shutting off phones and tuning out of all media may not work for everyone. For this reason, participating with your kids in what they do online, can be an amazing way to spend quality time and build stronger relationships with your kids.

Danielle also explains how important internet safety is and why it is so important with young kids to be aware of what they are watching on social media, who they’re communicating with, and what things they’re learning. Nowadays there is so much information on the internet and not all is positive or in alignment with what your family believes or sees as appropriate.

If you have been trying to find the right ways to connect with your kids while keeping your kids safe on social media, this episode is for you!

Shareable Quotes:

  • “The kids have been exposed to a beautified world of where everything is perfect. People have perfect makeup, perfect skin, perfect clothes, perfect everything, and it’s not what’s real.” – Danielle (Gasalberti) Betines
  • “At a young age they should be monitored on social media to see who they’re following, who’s following them..” – Danielle (Gasalberti) Betines
  • “I could sit on the couch all day long and just, I call it doom scrolling. And I just scroll on my phone all day long, watch these videos, and you come out of your social media bubble and you’re like, oh, my gosh, the real world is still out there.” – Danielle (Gasalberti) Betines

Take Action:

  • Remind your kids to stay out of Internet drama – if you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, then that’s not something you want to be sharing online about it.
  • Start conversations with your kids about social media. Have an open dialogue with them. They’ll be more willing to talk to you if you start the conversations and get involved with them.
