How To Make Fantastic Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream

Making vegan chocolate ice cream is incredibly easy. All you need is a blender and an ice cream maker. You could of course simply blend it and whip it by hand every once in a while out of the freezer, but having the right tools will make it all easier and more fun.

All The Ingredients

Coconut milk, canned: Coconut milk is such a versatile plant-based ingredient. It keeps forever in the pantry, tastes pretty neutral, and can be used in everything from desserts to curries. I always keep 3-4 cans for impromptu dinners and treats. I like to get brands that are organic and don’t contain additives, but any type will work in this recipe. I also prefer full-fat versions for a creamier result.

Cocoa powder: While it’s nice to get the highest-quality cocoa powder, any brand that you enjoy will work well. I generally try to get it organic and sustainable, but beyond that, I will buy what I can afford. If you don’t have blender and plan to simply whisk the mixture together, try to sift the cocoa powder first to avoid clumps.

Maple syrup: Maple syrup adds a wonderful depth of flavor to the chocolate. You can also use honey for a non-vegan version that is easier to scoop out, but I prefer maple syrup here.

Vanilla extract: This is the only ingredient that I believe must be high-quality. Try to source real vanilla extract rather than imitation. Remember, you only need a small amount!

What To Do with Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream

My favorite way to eat this vegan chocolate ice cream is simply scooped into a bowl! Its deep and satisfying flavor doesn’t need anything else. However, here are some other ideas:

  • Top it with cocoa nibs for a fancy dessert you could get at a high-end restaurant.
  • Add scoops to a halved banana and top with whipped cream.
  • Add a scoop to a slice of vanilla cake.
  • Top a slice of strawberry tart.
  • Drizzle with hot fudge, caramel, or chopped up candy bars for a special treat.

Turn It Into a Learning Experience

Making vegan chocolate ice cream doesn’t require any heat and is quick and easy. It’s a great recipe for kids to make. But as always, remember to teach them about safety. The Safety Pledge books by Miranda Mathis are an absolute must-have in every household. Kids are a lot more likely to remember how to be safe by hearing us talk about it while also backing up the information with fun drawings and engaging stories.
